Whatever you choose you to do, and we hope you choose to celebrate Valentine's with us, here's a few unknown facts about the origins of the big day...

How did it start?
The most popular theory is that around 260AD, the Roman Emperor Claudius II considered marriage a Christian concept and wanted nothing to do with it. A guy called Bishop Valentine performed secret marriages, was eventually caught and executed in February.

Why the 14th?
In 1537, King Henry VII officially made February 14th a national holiday of St Valentine’s and it has remained in place since.

Why are red roses a popular choice?
Venus the goddess of love, favoured red roses and even back in Roman times it was traditional for men and women to exchange flowers as a sign of good luck at the beginning of a relationship.

When did chocolate become part of it?
The custom of giving chocolates was started in 1868, by none other than Richard Cadbury. He gave his beloved a selection of chocolates in a heart shaped box after developing a new manufacturing technique and used the opportunity to promote and sell chocolates as part of Valentine’s Day.

Why does an ‘X’ mean a kiss?
Back in medieval times, when many people couldn’t write, they signed their names in front of a witness with an X and then kissed the X to show their sincerity.

It wasn’t always love & romance
Oliver Cromwell banned Valentine’s Day in 1653 for seven long years, along with Christmas too. Both celebrations began again when the Monarchy was restored in 1660, and Charles II took to the throne.
